Vintage photographs: 1860s

The 1860s really saw the dawn of popular photography. With the launch of the Carte de Visite at the very end of the previous decade, this new, faster, cheaper format took portrait photography away from the hands of a rich minority and into the mainstream.  Whilst hardly a medium for the working classes, photography was suddenly within the reach of the masses, and a whole craze began.
