About this site
The Hull Trawler Challenge
The Hull Trawler Challenge came about from a chance purchase of a batch of over 70 wonderful old lantern slides at auction. A little bit of sorting and research showed that they were mainly of two Hull trawlers, SS Canada and SS New Zealand, and dated from the early 1900s.
They give a unique and visually stunning view of daily life on board, but although they reveal so much, they also hold so many mysteries. When were they taken? And who by? And who are the crew members who sailed the seas some 100 years ago?
The aim of this site is to try and unravel these mysteries.
The challenge was ‘launched’ on Friday 27 February 2009. Using the photo-sharing website Flickr, and tapping into the existing communities there and across the web, the aim is to harness the power of the web to reach experts and amateur ‘detectives’ and learn all we can about these photographs.
